St Germain Des Pres Paris

A rare example of Romanesque architecture in Paris, St Germain is the city's oldest church. It was erected in the 11th and 12th centuries, and though devastated no less than four times in forty years by the Normans it was rebuilt each time in its severe Romanesque forms. In front of it are the remains of the 12th century portal, half hidden by the 17th century porch which was erected in 1607. The bell tower, on the other hand, is completely Romanesque, with its corners strengthened by robust buttresses.

Interior

It has three aisles and a transept, the end of which was modified in the 17th century, The chancel and ambulatory still retain much of the original 12th century architecture. In the second chapel on the right is the tomb of the great philosopher Descartes, and in the left transept is that of the Polish king John Casimir.
