St. Etienne Du Mont Paris
This is one of the most unusual churches in Paris, because of both its facade and the interior. It was begun in 1492 but completed only in 1622. The facade is a bizarre amalgamation of Gothic and Renaissance styles, with three superimposed pediments.
Interior. The inside is also extremely unusual. In Gothic style with three aisles and transept, it has very high cylindrical piers supporting the vaulting, linked by a tribune running above the arcades. But the most interesting part of the church is the jube, the roodscreen which separates the nave from the chancel. It was possibly designed by Philibert Delorme and is the only existing roodscreen known in Paris; it was erected between 1521 and 1545. Its rich openwork of Renaissance inspiration continues in the two spiral staircases at the sides. In the ambulatory, alongside the pillars of the Lady Chapel, are the tombs of Pascal and of Racine. The church also has fine stained glass from the 16th and 17th centuries.
