Sacre Coeur Paris

Standing majestically on the top of the Montmartre hill, it was begun in 1876 by' national subscription and consecrated in 1919. The architects who designed it (among them Abadie and Magne) built it in a curious style, a mixture of Romanesque and Byzantine. The four small domes and the large central dome, standing on the high drum, are typically Oriental. On the back part, the square bell tower 275 feet high contains the Savoyarde, a bell weighing 19 tons, one of the largest in the world. An imposing stairway leads up to the facade of the church, in front of which is a porch with three arches; above are the equestrian statues of King Louis the Blessed and Joan of Arc.

Interior. Its dimensions are impressive and the decorations of sculpture, paintings and mosaics are extremely elaborate. From inside the church, the visitor can descend to visit the the crypt and can also climb up to the top of the dome, from which there is a magnificent panoramic view of Paris and the surrounding areas.
