Carrousel - Paris

Designed by Pierre Francois Fontaine and Charles Percier, the arch was built between 1806 and 1808 and was intended to celebrate the victories of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1805. It imitates both the architectural design and the decoration of the Arch of Septimius Severus in Rome. Red and white marble columns frame the three archways and each side is filled with bas reliefs which recall the Emperor's victories. On top of it were placed the four gilded horses which had been removed by order of Napoleon from the Venetian basilica of San Marco, to which they were returned in 1815, The originals were then replaced by copies, and a chariot and the statue of Peace were added later.
