Montparnasse Paris
The name Montparnasse derives from a small hill familiarly called Mount Parnassus which was levelled during the 18th century. During the years between 1920 and 1940, the quarter was frequented above all by artists, writers and painters, who gave Montparnasse its typically Bohemian atmosphere, making it the companion and rival of the other celebrated quarter of Montmartre. The nerve centre of the area is Carrefour Raspail, the crossroads where Boulevard Raspail and Boulevard Montparnasse meet. Here stands one of Rodin's finest works, the bronze representing Balzac, 9 ft 2 in high, done in 1897.
CEMETERY
This is one of the most interesting places in the area to visit. Built in 1824, in it are buried writers (Proudhon, Maupassant, Huysmans, Baudelaire), painters (Fantin Latour, Soutine), sculptors (Brancusi, Rude, Houclon, Tristan Tzara), composers (Franck, Saint Saens) and Captain Dreyfus, protagonist and victim of the famous "Dreyfus Affair".
